Plug-in solar panels are small solar panel kits designed to feed electricity into your home through a standard mains socket. They are often called balcony solar, plug-in solar or plug-and-play solar.

They are not a replacement for a full rooftop solar system. Instead, they are a smaller, cheaper and more flexible way to reduce the amount of electricity your home imports from the grid during daylight hours.

In 2026, plug-in solar has become much more relevant in the UK because the government is changing the rules so compliant systems can be sold and used safely in British homes. That could make solar power accessible to many people who cannot install conventional rooftop panels, including renters, flat owners and people with small outdoor spaces.

What are plug-in solar panels?

Plug-in solar panels are small solar panel systems that generate electricity for immediate use in your home.

A typical plug-in solar kit includes one or two solar panels, a microinverter, a mounting system, a cable and a plug designed to connect safely to the home's electrical system.

The idea is simple. During daylight hours, the panels generate electricity. Your home can then use that electricity before it draws power from the grid. That means your fridge, router, laptop, washing machine, television or other daytime appliances may be partly powered by your own solar generation.

The important thing to understand is that plug-in solar is small-scale solar. It is designed to reduce your electricity use from the grid, not to make your home energy independent.

Why is plug-in solar suddenly relevant in the UK?

Plug-in solar has been common in parts of Europe for years, especially in Germany, where balcony solar systems are already widely used by people living in flats and rented homes.

The UK has been slower to adopt them because our electrical safety rules were not originally designed for ordinary household plugs to be used with electricity-generating equipment.

That began to change in March 2026, when the UK government announced plans to make compliant plug-in solar products available to households “within months”. In June 2026, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) consulted on the rule changes and interim product specification needed to allow safe, approved systems to be sold and used in UK homes.

That consultation closed on 30 June 2026. On 16 July 2026, DESNZ published the government response and Version 2.0 of the Plug-in Solar Device Interim Product Specification, giving the clearest picture yet of what UK launch kits and launch rules will look like.

The good news is that we now have a clear date. The new plug-in solar rules are scheduled to start on 27 August 2026. From that point, compliant kits can begin moving onto UK shop shelves, giving households a simpler and more affordable way to try solar at home.

How do plug-in solar panels work?

Plug-in solar panels produce DC current when exposed to daylight. A small device called a microinverter converts this into AC current, which is the type used by normal household appliances.

The converted AC current enters your home’s electrical circuit through a standard plug socket. Once it is available on the household circuit, appliances that are running at the time can use that solar-generated energy before drawing electricity from the grid.

For example, during the day your plug-in solar panels might first help cover always-on baseload, such as your fridge-freezer, broadband router and standby devices. If generation is higher than that background use, spare solar can then help power daytime devices such as a laptop, television, washing machine or other suitable appliance.

If your home needs more energy than the panels are producing at that moment, the rest comes from the grid as normal. You do not need to manually switch between solar and grid electricity.

Under the current government rules, plug-in solar kits cannot include a battery. Any solar electricity your home cannot use straight away will therefore flow back into the wider electricity network. Export tariffs for plug-in solar are not yet standard, but suppliers are beginning to develop them. In future, you may be able to receive a small payment for the excess solar electricity you export.

The position is clearer than it was, but plug-in solar is not fully open for normal consumer use yet.

On 16 July 2026, the UK government published its response to the plug-in solar consultation and Version 2.0 of the Plug-in Solar Device Interim Product Specification. The statutory instrument has now also been made and laid before Parliament, with the new compliant route scheduled to come into force on 27 August 2026.

Until that date, compliant plug-in solar kits cannot yet be legally sold and used through a household socket under the new route. From 27 August 2026, suppliers and retailers can legally begin offering compliant kits, and consumers can install them in line with the manufacturer's instructions, provided the products meet the applicable UK requirements.

That does not mean every kit sold online is automatically safe or legal to use in the UK. Buyers should be cautious with imported products, marketplace listings or systems that do not clearly meet UK requirements.

Important

A kit being advertised online with an 800W inverter or UK plug does not automatically mean it is approved for UK plug-in use. Wait for products that clearly state compliance with the UK interim specification and can be verified through the required approval route.

After a compliant plug-in solar kit is installed, the local network operator must also be notified. This is usually called DNO notification or G98 notification. When will plug-in solar panels be available in UK shops?

The new legal route is scheduled to come into force on 27 August 2026. From that date, suppliers and retailers can legally begin offering compliant plug-in solar kits in the UK, provided those products meet the applicable UK requirements.

That does not mean every retailer will have approved products ready on day one. Manufacturers still need to complete compliance work, product documentation, registration information and route-to-market steps before suitable kits appear on shelves. However, given the level of market interest, we would expect to see compliant kits being offered soon after the 27 August start date.

The UK government has said major retailers are involved in plans to bring plug-in solar to households. Reported retailers include names such as Currys, B&Q, Amazon, Lidl, Asda, Screwfix and Wickes.

For now, it is still worth being selective. Look for retailers that clearly state a kit complies with the UK Plug-in Solar Device Interim Product Specification, rather than buying a generic imported product and assuming it will qualify later.

How much do plug-in solar panels cost?

Early UK reporting suggests that 800W plug-in solar kits may start from around £400 to £450.

The final price could depend on the number of panels, inverter size and mounting hardware.

A balcony kit may need different mounting equipment from a garden kit. A shed roof kit may need different fixings again. So the headline kit price may not be the full installed cost.

How much could plug-in solar save?

Typical savings are expected to be modest but useful.

Government-backed figures suggest plug-in solar could save around £70 to £110 per year on electricity bills in suitable circumstances. Our calculator modelling suggests that many well-positioned 800W setups could save more, often around £95 to £155 a year.

Annual savings usually come down to three factors: how much electricity the panels generate, the home's baseload, meaning the background electricity already being used by always-on devices, and how much of the remaining spare solar electricity the home can use during the day.

You are likely to save more if your panels are in a bright, unshaded position and your home can use electricity while the panels are generating. You may save less if the panels are shaded, badly positioned or most of your electricity use is in the evening.

Will plug-in solar power my whole house?

No. Plug-in solar is not designed to power a whole home.

A typical plug-in solar system may help cover some of your always-on baseload, such as your fridge-freezer, broadband router and standby devices. When there is spare solar available, it may also help with other devices you use during the day, such as a laptop, TV or washing machine.

But it will not normally run high-demand appliances on its own, such as electric showers, ovens, tumble dryers, immersion heaters, electric heating or EV chargers.

You will still remain connected to the grid. Think of plug-in solar as a way to trim your electricity use, not replace your electricity supply.

Where can you put plug-in solar panels?

Plug-in solar panels need a bright, secure outdoor location with minimal shading.

Common options include balconies, terraces, patios, gardens, shed roofs, garage roofs, walls and suitable flat roofs.

For the best energy generation, a south-facing position is best. South-east and south-west can also work well, especially if the panels get good daylight for much of the day.

Panel angle also affects output. Tilted panels on a frame, pitched roof or shed roof usually receive sunlight more directly than panels mounted flat. Upright panels on a wall or balcony can still work, but they normally generate less over the year. If panels are placed on a flat roof or low frame, a small tilt is usually better than laying them completely flat, because it helps rainwater and dirt run off.

You should also check that the panels can be mounted securely, that there is a safe route for the cable, and that the system is within reach of a suitable plug socket.

Who are plug-in solar panels best for?

Plug-in solar is best for people who want a simpler, lower-cost and lower-commitment way to start generating some of their own electricity.

It can be a good fit for homeowners as well as renters. A full rooftop solar installation is not practical for everyone: it can be expensive, disruptive, fixed to one property, or unsuitable if you may move home in the next few years.

Plug-in solar may suit you if you have a suitable balcony, patio, garden, shed roof, garage roof, wall or other outdoor space with decent daylight and minimal shading. It is especially useful if you use electricity during the day, when the panels are generating.

It also opens up solar to households that have often been excluded from traditional rooftop systems, including renters, flat residents and people without control over their roof.

Who should probably avoid plug-in solar?

Plug-in solar will not suit every home.

It may not be worth it if your outdoor space is heavily shaded, you have nowhere safe to mount the panels, you mainly use electricity at night, your landlord or freeholder will not give permission, you expect it to power your whole home, or you can afford rooftop solar and have a good roof for it.

For many homeowners, full rooftop solar will still be the better long-term investment.

Plug-in solar vs rooftop solar

Plug-in solar and rooftop solar both use solar panels to reduce the amount of electricity you buy from the grid, but they operate at very different scales.

A full rooftop solar system is much larger and is usually designed to cover a significant share of a home's electricity use. In some homes, especially when paired with a battery and good energy habits, rooftop solar can cover most or even all grid electricity needs over parts of the year.

Plug-in solar is smaller and simpler. It is designed to offset a modest amount of your electricity use during the day, rather than power the whole home.

Both types of system can lead to long-term savings, and both are designed to last for many years. The difference is that rooftop solar usually offers bigger savings with a higher upfront cost, while plug-in solar offers smaller savings with a lower upfront cost and less commitment.

Is plug-in solar better than rooftop solar?

For most homeowners with a suitable roof, rooftop solar will usually generate more electricity and save more money.

But rooftop solar is expensive, fixed in place and not practical for everyone. Plug-in solar is better understood as a different category: a smaller, simpler and more accessible form of solar.

Plug-in solar may be the better option if you cannot install rooftop panels, do not want to spend thousands upfront, or want something more portable.

Rooftop solar may be the better option if you own your home, have a suitable roof, plan to stay for years and want maximum long-term savings.

Do you need an electrician for plug-in solar?

The government's intention is that compliant plug-in solar systems below the relevant output limit of 800W can be installed without needing a qualified electrician.

However, this depends on the product meeting the interim specification, the product instructions and the condition of your home's wiring.

Once compliant kits are available, they should come with clear installation instructions. You may still need professional help if you are unsure whether your socket is suitable, your wiring is old, the cable route is awkward, the panels need complex mounting, the product instructions require it, or your landlord, insurer or freeholder asks for it.

The key point is that "plug-in" should not mean "ignore safety". The panels still need to be mounted securely and connected only as the manufacturer allows.

Can renters use plug-in solar?

Yes, renters may be able to use plug-in solar, but written consent should come before buying or installing a kit.

Plug-in solar can be especially useful for renters because it is smaller than rooftop solar, often removable, and can be taken with you if you move. But a rented home is still someone else's property, so the landlord, freeholder, managing agent or housing provider may need to agree.

Before buying, renters should check whether the location is allowed, identify a compliant kit, read the manufacturer's mounting instructions and request written permission for the specific product, location and mounting method.

Can flat owners use plug-in solar?

Flat owners may be able to use plug-in solar, especially where they have a private balcony or terrace, but building permission may still be needed.

Many flats have leasehold rules about external changes, balcony use and anything attached to the outside of the building. Even if you own the flat, you may not own the outside wall, balcony railings or roof.

Before installing, check the lease, freeholder rules, building-management process, insurance position and the manufacturer's installation instructions.

Some balcony, cladding, boundary-wall and building-safety situations are prohibited by the official plug-in solar rules, so the proposed location matters as much as the product.

What happens to unused electricity?

Plug-in solar works best when your home uses the energy as it is generated.

If your panels are producing energy while appliances are running, your home can use that solar energy straight away, reducing the amount you need to buy from the grid.

If your panels produce more than your home is using at that moment, the unused energy will typically flow back out to the local electricity grid.

For most households, the main saving comes from using your own solar energy directly during the day.

Some suppliers, including Octopus Energy and Fuse Energy, have said they are working on ways for plug-in solar customers to be paid for exported electricity, but these tariffs are not available yet.

Can I sell plug-in solar electricity back to the grid?

Not yet, but this is expected to change.

At launch, plug-in solar owners should assume that the main financial benefit comes from using the electricity they generate directly in the home. However, Octopus Energy and Fuse Energy have both said they are working on export options for plug-in solar customers.

Exact eligibility, rates and launch dates have not yet been confirmed. But if future plug-in solar tariffs were similar to export rates available today, the payments could be meaningful. Outgoing Octopus currently pays 12p for each kWh exported, so exporting 250–500 kWh over a year would be worth roughly £30–£60 at that rate.

How much a household could actually earn would depend on how much its panels generate and, importantly, how much of that electricity is used directly in the home rather than exported. We currently exclude export income from our calculator until suitable plug-in solar tariffs are actually available.

Does plug-in solar work on cloudy days?

Yes, solar panels can still generate electricity on cloudy days, but output will be lower than in bright direct sunlight.

In the UK, this matters. A plug-in solar panel may still contribute useful electricity on a bright cloudy day, but generation will vary across the year.

The best generation happens during the spring and summer, especially around the middle of the day. Winter generation is lower because the days are shorter and the sun is weaker.

Does plug-in solar work in winter?

Yes, but it will usually generate much less electricity than in summer.

Winter has shorter days, a lower sun angle, more cloud and more shading from nearby buildings and trees.

What should I check before buying plug-in solar?

Before buying a plug-in solar kit, check the following.

1. Is it compliant for UK use?

Be cautious of plug-in solar kits already being sold online. Until the new route comes into force on 27 August 2026, do not assume a kit can simply be plugged into a standard socket. Once compliant kits become available, look for clear evidence that the product meets the UK requirements and is supplied with the correct instructions, plug, cables and registration information.

2. Is your location appropriate?

South-facing is usually best, but east and west-facing positions can also work. Heavy shading and north-facing orientations will reduce savings and are usually a weaker choice if another position is available.

3. Can you mount it safely?

Panels must be secure in wind and bad weather. Balcony mounting needs particular care.

4. Can you get permission?

Renters should get written consent before buying or installing. Leaseholders and flat owners may also need freeholder, managing-agent or building-management approval.

5. Is your socket suitable?

Use the product only as instructed. Do not improvise with extension leads, adapters or unsafe cable routes.

6. Will you use electricity during the day?

Savings are better when your home uses electricity while the panels are generating.

7. Is the payback realistic?

If a kit costs £450 and saves £95 to £155 per year, that suggests a simple payback period of roughly 3 to 5 years before allowing for mounting costs, kit price differences or future electricity price changes.

Is plug-in solar safe?

Plug-in solar can be safe if the product is properly designed, certified, installed and used according to the rules.

Safety concerns are one reason the UK has taken time to approve these systems. The government has been looking at product standards, wiring rules, grid connection requirements and protections such as anti-islanding.

Anti-islanding means the system should shut down if there is a power cut, so it does not continue feeding electricity into the grid when engineers may be working on it.

The interim specification is designed around one device per eligible socket circuit, with a maximum output of 800VA. However, current GB network rules still restrict this to one device per household unless and until G98 is amended.

The practical advice is simple: buy only compliant UK products, follow the manufacturer's instructions, do not modify the kit, do not connect multiple kits, do not use unsafe adapters or extension leads, mount panels securely, and ask for help if your wiring or installation situation is unusual.

Should I buy a plug-in solar kit now or wait?

The safest answer is: wait for compliant UK products from reputable retailers.

The market is moving quickly, but buying too early could mean ending up with a product that is not suitable for UK rules, lacks proper certification, or cannot be safely connected as advertised.
